Academics

 

The Seim Learning Center was officially dedicated in 2005 to honor the Seim family. Dan Seim served as the founding principal of the school from 1994 to 2005. His father, Alton Seim, was a frequent volunteer laborer at the school.

 

In 2011, Forest Hills took some additional steps to integrate technology into the ten classrooms of the school. Digital projectors, document camera, interactive whiteboards and laptop computers are now available in all classrooms. The school is also contemplating the purchase of a mobile cart of iPad computers.


Computer Lab Rules


1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, or the name and location of my school without permission.


2. I will tell an adult right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.


3. I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents.


4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents or teacher.


5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. If I do, I will tell my parents or an adult right away so that they can contact the service provider.


6. I will not access sites that are not agreed upon by my parents or teachers at school. I will follow the the Internet Agreement rules that I have signed.


7. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than to my parents.


8. I will check with my parents or teachers before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize our privacy.


9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.


10. I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.

 

 

Library & Technology

Library

Students attend library for instuctional time with our librarian weekly. Lower grades are introduced to a variety of authors and genres in our themed monthly units. Children learn skills in locating and choosing reading materials starting in Kindergarten while upper grades explore the Dewey Decimal system in detail. Reading choices are enhanced with studies on award winning books and nominees.

Our online library system and card catalog are similar to public library systems helping students to work confidently in the rapidly ramchanging world of information science. Students check out materials weekly and are encouraged to read for entertainment. Fostering a love for reading is emphasized at every grade level.

Classroom units of study are entwined with library themes to expand the whole learning process. The library is open before and after school for additional check out time and research assistance.

Technology

Students receive formal instruction in our computer lab weekly. A wide range of programs assist students in the learning process with our technology teacher structuring lessons to incorporate classroom studies.

Children learn the proper use and care of computers, program skills and vocabulary terms beginning in Kindergarten and build upon those terms and skills in every grade. girls in labKeyboarding formally starts in 3rd grade and continues through 8th grade. Upper grades concentrate on research instruction which is integrated into the course work through a wide variety of assignments. Emphasis is placed on the process rather than product. Students learn to create a strategy for research and to use the most appropriate materials, whether print or non print.

Forest Hills is committed to teaching the proper use of information while maintaining Internet safety and upholding and practicing netsmartzall copyright laws. Formal instruction on these rules and laws are implemented in every lesson and with every grade.

The main lab features 27 computers with flat screen monitors, a projector and screen for interactive learning, Microsoft Office programs, Kidpix, Kidspiration, All The Right Type and Internet with various educational sites. Additional computer time is offered for classrooms doing special projects with their teachers. Each classroom has at least one computer for student use as needed. The campus is fully networked and students are able to access their work at any computer station.
